Which Surahs To Recite In Salah – An Easy Guide To All 5 Prayers

Do you recite the same three short surahs in every prayer and wonder whether that’s enough? If you’ve asked which surahs to recite in salah, the Sunnah has a clear answer, organized by prayer and by surah length.

This guide explains what is required in each rak’ah and what is recommended after Al-Fatihah. It also covers the surahs the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited in specific prayers and how to build a varied rotation from what you already know.

All rulings below come from the hadith collections and from established fatwa bodies, including Imam An-Nawawi’s works and Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta.

Which Surahs To Recite In Salah

Surah Al-Fatihah – The Basic Rukn In Every Rak’ah

Surah Al-Fatihah must be recited in every rak’ah of every prayer. The majority of scholars count it as a pillar (rukn), so a prayer is invalid without it, whether the prayer is obligatory or voluntary.

Is Reciting Another Surah After Al-Fatihah Required?

No. Reciting a surah or some verses after Al-Fatihah is a confirmed Sunnah, not an obligation. It applies to both rak’ahs of Fajr and Jumu’ah, and to the first two rak’ahs of Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha.

In the third and fourth rak’ahs, the preferred practice is to recite Al-Fatihah alone. Abu Qatadah reported in Bukhari and Muslim that the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited Al-Fatihah and two surahs in the first two rak’ahs of Dhuhr and Asr. He made the first rak’ah longer than the second.

How Much Recitation Counts After Al-Fatihah?

The Sunnah is fulfilled by reciting even one meaningful verse after Al-Fatihah. Imam An-Nawawi notes that a complete short surah is better than an equal amount taken from a longer surah. Reciting part of a long surah risks stopping where the meaning is still incomplete.

What The Mufassal Is And How It Is Divided

The Mufassal is the final section of the Quran, made up of shorter surahs with frequent breaks between them. Scholars use it to match surah length to each prayer.

Its exact starting point is debated. Imam An-Nawawi recorded twelve opinions, and the most common ones place the start at Surah Qaf or Surah Al-Hujurat. Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta divides it into three parts.

    1. Long Mufassal (Tiwal al-Mufassal)

The long Mufassal runs from Surah Qaf to just before Surah An-Naba. Examples include Qaf, Adh-Dhariyat, Ar-Rahman, Al-Waqi’ah, and Al-Mulk.

    2. Medium Mufassal (Awsat al-Mufassal)

    The medium Mufassal runs from Surah An-Naba to Surah Ad-Duha. Examples include Al-Buruj, At-Tariq, Al-A’la, Al-Ghashiyah, Ash-Shams, and Al-Layl.

    3. Short Mufassal (Qisar al-Mufassal)

    The short Mufassal runs from Surah Ad-Duha to Surah An-Nas. Examples include Al-Qadr, Al-Asr, Al-Kafirun, An-Nasr, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas.

Most people already know the short Mufassal by heart, but the Sunnah for most prayers points to the long and medium sections. If you want to move beyond Juz ‘Amma with correct recitation, Tabarak Academy offers a Short Surah Memorization Course and a Juz 30 Memorization Course taught one-on-one.

Which Surahs To Recite In Each Of The Five Daily Prayers

Each daily prayer has a recommended length, drawn from the Prophet’s consistent practice. Abu Hurairah said he had never prayed behind anyone whose prayer resembled the Prophet’s more than a certain imam.

That imam lengthened the first two rak’ahs of Dhuhr and shortened Asr. “He recited short Mufassal in Maghrib, medium in Isha, and long in Fajr” (An-Nasa’i).

    PrayerRecommended lengthExample surahs
    FajrLong MufassalQaf, Ar-Rahman, Al-Waqi’ah, Al-Mulk
    DhuhrSlightly shorter than FajrAl-Mulk, Al-Qalam, Al-Haqqah
    AsrMedium MufassalAl-A’la, Al-Ghashiyah, Ash-Shams
    MaghribShort MufassalAl-Kafirun, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas
    IshaMedium MufassalAsh-Shams, Al-Layl, Al-A’la

    1. Which Surahs Are Recited In Fajr?

Fajr is the prayer with the longest recitation, taken from the long Mufassal. Jabir ibn Samurah said the Prophet used to recite at the dawn prayer, “Qaf. By the glorious Qur’an” and a passage of similar length, and then shortened his prayer afterwards”, Sahih Muslim. The Prophet (peace be upon him) recited Surah Qaf in Fajr. Surahs such as Al-Waqi’ah, Ar-Rahman, and Al-Mulk follow the same guidance.

    2. Which Surahs Are Recited In Dhuhr?

Dhuhr uses long recitation, slightly shorter than Fajr according to the Maliki and Shafi’i schools. Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri reported that “the Prophet recited about 30 verses in each of Dhuhr’s first two rak’ahs,” Sahih Muslim. That is roughly the length of Surah Al-Mulk.

    3. Which Surahs Are Recited In Asr?

Asr uses medium-length recitation, shorter than Dhuhr. The same hadith of Abu Sa’id estimates about 15 verses in each of Asr’s first two rak’ahs. Surahs like Al-A’la (19 verses) or Al-Ghashiyah (26 verses) fit this range.

    4. Which Surahs Are Recited In Maghrib?

Maghrib uses the short Mufassal, such as Al-Kafirun, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas. This is the general practice, not a strict limit. Jubayr ibn Mut’im reported: “I heard the Prophet recite Surah At-Tur in Maghrib,” Sahih Al-Bukhari.

    5. Which Surahs Are Recited In Isha?

Isha uses the medium Mufassal. When Mu’adh ibn Jabal made Isha too long for his congregation, the Prophet (peace be upon him) told him to “recite surahs like Ash-Shams, Al-A’la, Ad-Duha, and Al-Layl” (Bukhari and Muslim).

Surahs The Prophet Recited In Specific Prayers

Some prayers have surahs named specifically in authentic hadith. Imam An-Nawawi wrote that every recitation listed below appears in well-known hadith in Sahih collections and elsewhere.

    • What To Recite In Fajr On Friday: The Sunnah for Fajr on Friday is Surah As-Sajdah in the first rak’ah and Surah Al-Insan in the second.
    • What To Recite In Jumu’ah Prayer: In Jumu’ah, the Prophet recited Surah Al-Jumu’ah in the first rak’ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun in the second. He also sometimes recited Surah Al-A’la in the first and Surah Al-Ghashiyah in the second. Both pairs are authentic.
    • What To Recite In The Two Sunnah Rak’ahs Before Fajr: The two rak’ahs before Fajr are among the shortest Sunnah prayers. You can recite in the first rak’ah:

Say ye: “We believe in Allah, and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Isma’il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: We make no difference between one and another of them: And we bow to Allah (in Islam).”

    Surah Al-Baqarah – 136, and:

Say: “O People of the Book! come to common terms as between us and you: That we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah.” If then they turn back, say ye: “Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allah’s Will).

Surah Aal-i-Imraan – 64 in the second. Alternatively, recite Surah Al-Kafirun and Surah Al-Ikhlas; Sahih Muslim confirms both options.

    • What To Recite In The Maghrib Sunnah, Tawaf, And Istikharah Prayers: For the Sunnah after Maghrib, the two rak’ahs after Tawaf, and Salat al-Istikharah, recite Surah Al-Kafirun in the first rak’ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second.
    • What To Recite In Witr: For a three-rak’ah Witr, recite Surah Al-A’la in the first rak’ah and Surah Al-Kafirun in the second. In the third, recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, followed by Al-Falaq and An-Nas.

Is It Wrong To Recite The Same Short Surahs In Every Prayer?

No. If you keep repeating Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas because they are the only surahs you have memorized, your prayer is valid, and there is no blame on you. Imam An-Nawawi stated that reciting longer or shorter than the recommended lengths is permissible.

Repetition is a starting point, not a final goal. Each new surah you learn brings you closer to the recitation the Prophet practiced, and you understand more of what you recite. Tabarak Academy’s Al-Azhar-certified tutors teach in private live sessions, so you can memorize at your own pace without the pressure of a group class.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Surahs After Al-Fatihah

These four mistakes come up often among people learning the rules of recitation:

    • Reversing the Mushaf order: Reciting Al-Falaq in the first rak’ah and Al-Ikhlas in the second is valid but disliked (makruh). The Sunnah is to follow the Mushaf order.
    • Making the second rak’ah longer: The Sunnah is a longer first rak’ah and a shorter second.
    • Stopping mid-meaning: When reciting part of a long surah, stop at a natural verse ending, not in the middle of a connected idea.
    • Imams lengthening for a mixed congregation: The hadith of Mu’adh shows that an imam should keep in mind the elderly, the sick, and people with urgent needs.

The 3-Tier Surah Rotation – A Practical Memorization Plan

If you know only a handful of surahs, use this three-step rotation, built from the Mufassal divisions:

    1. Short tier first: Learn 4 to 6 surahs from the short Mufassal and use them for Maghrib and the Sunnah prayers.
    2. Medium tier next: Add Al-A’la, Al-Ghashiyah, Ash-Shams, and Al-Layl. These cover Asr, Isha, Witr, and Jumu’ah.
    3. Longer tier last: Memorize Al-Mulk, then Ar-Rahman or Al-Waqi’ah, for Fajr and Dhuhr.

The plan covers prayers in order of how often you need each length. Within each tier, every surah you learn has a clear place to be used in your daily prayers, which keeps it fresh in your memory.

    Conclusion

The core rule for which surahs to recite in salah is simple. Al-Fatihah is required in every rak’ah. Another surah after it is a Sunnah in the first two rak’ahs and in Fajr and Jumu’ah.

The Sunnah matches length to the prayer: long Mufassal for Fajr and Dhuhr, medium for Asr and Isha, and short for Maghrib. It also names specific surahs for Friday Fajr, Jumu’ah, Witr, and the Fajr Sunnah. Reciting whatever you know remains valid, so start with what you have and add one surah at a time.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Recite The Same Surah In Both Rak’ahs?

Yes, repeating the same surah in both rak’ahs is permissible and does not affect the validity of your prayer. Varying the surahs is preferred when you are able.

Do I Recite A Surah After Al-Fatihah In The Third And Fourth Rak’ahs?

No, the preferred practice is to recite only Al-Fatihah in the third and fourth rak’ahs. Adding a surah there does not invalidate the prayer.

What Is The Minimum Recitation After Al-Fatihah?

The minimum is one meaningful verse after Al-Fatihah. A complete short surah is better than reciting the same amount from a longer surah.

Does A Follower Behind The Imam Recite A Surah After Al-Fatihah?

In the loud prayers (Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha), the follower listens to the imam’s recitation instead of reciting a surah. In the silent prayers, the follower may recite a surah after Al-Fatihah. Scholars differ on details, so follow your school of thought.

Which Surahs Should A Beginner Memorize First For Salah?

A beginner should start with Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas, and Al-Kafirun. These cover Maghrib, the Fajr and Maghrib Sunnahs, and Witr. Then move on to Al-A’la and Al-Ghashiyah.
